Berkeley City College launched their ACE program (PERSIST) in 2009 to support underserved students enrolled in basic skills courses. Since that time, the college has developed numerous course innovations for concurrent enrollment and career technical education partnerships. This 10th annual transformative professional development experience is designed for faculty, staff, and administrators from the college and community.
We recommend that a group of faculty and administrators attend a FELI together to obtain the maximum benefit for your school. All participants need to attend each day in full. Each FELI section is capped at 25 participants. Early bird pricing is available.

Kapi'olani Community College secured funding for an ACE adoption in the Fall of 2015 through an innovative model that has been shown to be very effective with native Hawaiian students. Their last FELI was one of our largest with multiple cohorts and attendees from 6 of the 7 community colleges in Hawaii. KCC is leading the way and invites a diverse group of faculty, staff, administrators to join them for another transformative professional development experience.

Berkeley City College (BCC) launched their ACE program in the Fall of 2009. Since that time BCC has developed numerous course innovations for diverse student populations. They are currently in partnership with the City of Berkeley's 20/20 Vision - Completion Velocity program which supports youth with college and career readiness. This event will provide the Completion Velocity team an opportunity to experience the ACE model as they explore ways to leverage the ACE curriculum with Berkeley youth. The college is planning to leverage the ACE Foundation of Leadership course as an orientation to college for incoming Umoja Community students.

Session Description: Evidence suggests that closing the student equity gap will require addressing non-cognitive skills such as grit and persistence. However, without measuring the effects of affective interventions we cannot determine effective practices. This session will focus on academic and non-cognitive evidence of effective practices, and models of best practices from across the country.

Interest in non-cognitive skill building in higher education is growing. but what academic impact is this attention having on students, especially those who are underprepared for college? is there a lasting and long-term effect on student success by changing the trajectory of student’s non-cognitive skills? is there
a causal link? in this workshop we will explore these questions, focusing on research being conducted at multiple colleges assessing the predictive power of non-cognitive measures coupled with other measures, such as students’ high school transcripts and working styles. we will also discuss the incorporation of non- cognitive factors in the state-level discussions around multiple measures.

For students who have experienced trauma in their lives, whether in an educational or familial setting, social justice pedagogy (SJP) can increase their chances of academic success. a model of education utilized in the academy for college excellence (ace), SJP incorporates social justice survey research with accelerated academics to bring basic skills students to college-level success in one semester. in this interactive breakout, participants will learn about SJP and how to apply it in their classrooms. in ace, students come to recognize their life experiences as part of a larger historical context and begin to understand how issues in their lives are often the result of systemic injustices. in order to change the status quo, students become motivated to make a difference through the acquisition and creation of knowledge.

This will be the twelth FELI hosted on the campus of Cabrillo College in Aptos California. The ACE program began at Cabrillo, with the first ACE student cohort of students in the Fall of 2003 on the Watsonville campus. In the Winter FELI 2014 that relationship continued as employees from the city of Watsonville attended and contributed a rich community-based organization's perspective. Since that institute the Monterey winter and summer FELIs have become known for their diverse mix of different colleges colleagues and community members.

Arkansas State University Newport (ASUN), in collaboration with Ozarka College, will be holding this FELI to train faculty in preparation for launching their student cohorts in the Fall 2015 term on their respective campuses. Ozarka College will be pioneering a new Foundations of Leadership course model while ASUN has already made innovations in a new learning community model this Spring, which will be enhanced by ACE courses this Fall. Registration is open to ASUN & Ozarka faculty and staff and a limited number of colleagues from other colleges and universities.
In July 2014 Kapi`olani Community College hosted a massive FELI, attended by six of the seven community colleges in Hawaii. KCC is the first to secure funding for an ACE adoption in the fall of 2015 through an innovative model that has already been shown to be very effective with native Hawaiian students. This FELI is free to KCC instructors and due to demand does not have external seats available at this time.
